Many kidney stones will pass spontaneously and will not require surgical treatment. Whether a stone can pass successfully primarily depends on the size of the stone. Based on several studies of stone patients, a size criteria of 5mm or less (about 0.2 inches) is generally felt to predict a reasonable chance (50-70%) for spontaneous passage.
The location of a kidney stone when it is diagnosed also is predictive of likely success at spontaneous passage. Stones that are more distal (closer to the bladder) are more likely to pass than stones that are more proximal (closer to the kidneys).

If ur stone is still at the same position then its an impacted stone. Considering that u have hydronephrosis means u have developed back pressure changes. Were u ever put on drugs like Silodosin/Tamsulosin? If no, u need to take 8 mg of silodosin at night time for 2weeks. If ur pain is too severe, better get operated for the same.
Quick update. I had laser lithotripsy, just in case that matters.
I have passed dozens in the last decade, but two months ago had dozens removed from my kidneys with lithoscopy after a 6mm in my ureter finally put me in the ER.
I’m still pushing out bits and pieces, and I wonder if it’s normal to excrete a sort of brownish paste that looks like a kidney stone that didn’t form.
Kurt, that brownish paste sounds like the residue from stones that were broken up during your procedure.

Okay, this is my experience and I am still going through it so here it is. I started experiencing renal colic on November 22, 2015. It was so bad that I had to go to the emergency room. At the ED they performed a CT scan and said that I had a 11.5 mm kidney stone IN the kidney at the uretopelvic junction that was partially obstructing. The ED doctor told me in no uncertain terms that it would not pass and if it moved and obstructed the kidney juncture I could lose a kidney, and that I needed lithotripsy. They set me up to see a urologist on Monday ( 3 days later). During that time I RAN to the health store and bought Chanca Piedra “Stone Buster”, took the prescription Flomax and drank lemonade like my life depended on it. I also drank “Horsetail” tea which is known to melt the barbs off stones. On Monday, I had still hadn’t passed the stone so I went to the urologist and he said he had to take an x-ray to see if the stone was visible so that he could figure out which procedure to use. When he called me back, he said that the stone had moved OUT of the kidney and was half-way to the bladder and that I still needed the surgery. I asked for a copy of the x-ray report and unfortunately I received it AFTER I had the surgery. He lied to me. The stone had reduced in size to a 7mm stone and was at the L4-L5 level and almost to the bladder. That stone had moved out of the kidney and almost to the bladder in 4 days! This is not my first stone but this is the first time I had used Chanca Pietra. Now I have a $20,000 laser lithotripsy bill because a Dr. that didn’t want to entertain other options and basically kept information from me. I really believe I was almost going to pass that stone but I was rushed through everything. The pain after the surgery was worse than the stone. I bled for two days and have a stint that makes me feel like I have to pee constantly with a pressure in my bladder for a week now. Pain meds help but I hate being knocked out. On the way home from the hospital, which was an hour drive, I had to make my husband actually stop the car so I could find my pain meds because I didn’t think I was going to make it home. If I had to do it again, I would just take the Flomax, which opens up the ureter, take the Chanca Piedra and drink Horsetail Tea and lemonade. I have another stone in my LEFT kidney and that stone has reduced from 15 mm to 11mm. No pain. I have never tried the Chanca Peidra before but I am totally sold on it. Was ur stone detected by a CT or USG? Its possible that ur stone was never as big as reported. 11.5mm stone is unlikely to pass!!

Hi, can I ask how long you had to wear the stent. I have a 7.8 mm stone in my ureter almost to my bladder and they are only giving me until July 26th to pass it or they are going to do surgery to remove it. They said no about lithotripsy, and if I have this surgery I too will wake up with a stent. I said well I won’t have the surgery. They said well you are risking losing your kidney. Why? I still pee. I am 44, have suffered with calcium oxolate stones since I was 18. I have tried the water treatment gallons of the stuff, lemons, cranberry juice, Flomax, Hydrocodone for pain. and 2x veteran of lithotripsy one for a 9mm the other a 11mm. My last trip to the ER was a waste I knew what it was but the doctor still wanted to run a bunch of test, blood, urine, and ultrasound. ER doctor told me years ago that I live in the kidney stone belt drinking well water my entire life. Now I drink nothing but bottle water and cranberry juice 1 cup of coffee in the morning no tea no dark sodas. One thing I have found that you get over the counter at your local CVS Walgreens possibly bring your mom-and-pop places a drug called AZO it is OTC it’s usually in the women’s healthcare section but it’s for urinary tract pain and it does seem to help some specially if you don’t have the money for prescription. No thing that helps especially if it’s been in your back or maybe even a little lower than that the frozen can orange juice and wrap it up in one towel and just lay on it to help me so I’ll lay there 20 minutes maybe more til it eases off. I say this to bring this to a point all my kidney stones have all been in my right kidney nothing in my left… any ideas ?
William, do you sleep on your left side? I have read that in side sleepers, up to 80 percent of stones form on the same side that you sleep on.
I started having pain about five days ago. I went to the ER and they did a CAT scan. I have a 7 mm stone. Any suggestions would be helpful. I can’t get in for the pulverizing procedure for three weeks. Currently I’m not having any pain but drinking a lot of lemon in my water. The Flomax they gave me makes me tired as hell. I’m currently dealing with my third stone. You’re basically doing all you can do at this point. Just remember to keep pushing fluids and try to stay on the Flomax of possible. Is there any way you could take it at bedtime to offset some of the fatigue? A little trick I’ve learned along the way….when you’re having an acute attack of pain try taking a hot shower or bath. I usually do this until my pain med kicks in. Doesn’t take away all the discomfort but makes it manageable until the hydrocodone takes effect. Good luck to you and try to stay positive. You will get through this!
I have my 7mm stone in my right kidney and 3mm in the left, and currently taking medicines for two weeks now. So, I have visited my urologist and told me that I need to undergo to ESWL to get my kidneys stones pass, I am 20y/o now and it is my first time experiencing Kidney stones. I am so afraid to do that treatment because of reading articles about it, that the pain will come after you took the ESWL. I am asking if there’s still a chance that I can pass my kidney stones without any surgery or shockwave?
Have same thing … Am doing Apple Cider Vinegar in warm water, lemon, …. also take Renavive … and Chanca Piedra (Herb Pharm, Stone Breaker) … read Manohar above (7mm stone passed with this tincture). Breaking the stone in the kidney is way easier than when it’s already going down the ureter (painful). Don’t worry, that just tightens your organs more. Just be proactive with above suggestions. All those things dissolve calcium.
I agree though … modern medicine’s approach seems to do more damage than good. Best thing once you’re through this is to radical change your lifestyle and diet for the better so they don’t return again. Best
Hey Guys ! I am suffering from stones since I was 20 and now I am 30 years old. Every one or two years, the stones come back and I visit doctor. Here are few things that I do to relieve the pain and flush the stone. I am not suggesting it to any one, just telling what I am doing over the years when stone comes back.
1) Mix a lemon + Tea Spoon of Natural Honey in Glass of mild ( not very cold or hot) water and drink it atleast once in day , especially in morning.
2) Take one cup of tea and add same amount of water in it and drink it.
3) Drink Green Tea.

Well black and green tea contain oxolate a which CAUSE kidney stones, so I am not surprised you are continuing to form stones following that regiment. To stop forming stones, avoid tea (black and green have the most oxolates but even herbal teas have varying amounts of oxolates and drink hot lemon water instead.
Hi.. I have had a history of kidney stones for years and have some great news for those that would try this procedure..Most of my episodes start with Gross Hematuria followed by extreme pain or in my last episode very little pain just an ache coming and going from my left kidney and pelvic area…always develop on the same side..at first sign of the blood in my urine I started with lemons that’s right lemons..first an 8 ounce glass followed an hour later with H2O well let me say this has been the best episode so far..I started passing gravel and continue on a daily basis with the pure lemon juice(do this everyday) until all remnants of the stone or stones are cleared out of your system..lemons work they dissolve stones..since I have been on this program have passed gravel and brownish paste which is a result of the stone being dissolved..this WORKS..lemons..lemons..lemons,ALSO apple cider ort juice is the best,btw..small sharp stones can cause as much Hematuria as large ones..hope this helps..btw..milk is on the list of this diet go figure.. also do not use olive oil use vegetable oil olives are a BIG NO NO..
I’m 56 and have suffered with kidney stones since I was 16. The past 3 years have been the worst. I’ve passed a total of 122 stones during that time period…normally in the 4-5 mm range. I currently have a larger stone on the right side that I have felt for over 3 months. I believe it is in the lower third of the ureter and I only have sporadic pain…but the urge to urinate is constant. I’m now on Flomax and hoping this will pass soon. I’m going to try the massager method described earlier in this thread. We’ll see what happens.
I posted on here several months ago. I had a large stone with other smaller stones behind it. Tonight I finally passed it…but I almost went to the hospital before hand. It measures 12mm x 8mm and caused some bleeding after it entered the urethra. I went on FloMax 2 months ago…I really don’t know if that helped. Best of luck and care to all….
My struggle is the persistent urge to urinate. I did not experience the sharp, stabbing pain that others have with larger stones. At the most, it was a dull ache early on in my left kidney area. After ruling out a UTI, but observing slight hematuria in the urinary analysis, I went in for XR KUB and a 0.3 cm (3mm) stone was found in the general lower ureter area (KUB is not as good as CT for precise location or shape). From all I’ve read, this size should be relatively simple to pass, but for now I still feel as though it has yet to enter my bladder through the one way valve. I am drinking over 2 L of water daily with lemon in hopes to possibly dissolve and flush the stone further. I may still see a urologist for a CT just to ensure there isn’t a barb impeding the progress (my buddy had a barb on his stone which he had removed through outpatient surgery). Just passed what my doctor told me was the largest of 3 stones at 4 mm (3.7 mm, but who’s quibbling here? The damned thing felt like Kilimanjaro to me). The thing took FIVE WEEKS from the point of passing down to the bladder from the kidneys to actually coming out and it felt like a UTI the whole time after it got past the kidneys. The whole damned experience start to finish was horrifying, from the the unbearabable pain of the kidney stone, to the the after effects of feeling like I had to pee 24×7 even when I’d just peed, to the tingling sensationation when urinating which was damned close to an orgasm (OK, that part was kinda OK) to the actual friggin’ ALIEN COMING OUT OF MY PENIS while I was peeing. Since nothing both solid and the size of a tooth had ever emerged from there before, I was taken aback and a bit ..well…grossed out. Its like a bone just emerged from my penis.. and a BIG GODDAMNED BONE compared to the size of that opening, from my point of view. The thing was not round, or uniform, and was jagged and looked mean and sharp and I’m already lining up my gizzards and penis for therapy after expelling that evil, undead alien. But even knowing …vaguely..what was s’pose to happen, I wasn’t prepared because no one described what the hell comes out completely unexpectedly. I’m just just minding my own damned business peeing the Colorado River just like the last five weeks, bracing for the slight burn thats very close to having an orgasm at a public urinal, when FRIGGIN’ BLOODY BROWN BOULDERS start tumblingly out of the stream. I just got my first little friend four days ago, while driving (with a half hour to get home with my kid in the car). Finally get to the ER when the next wave hits and its the worst pain yet. I was practically lying on the floor in pool of cold sweat waiting for them to admit me. It took an hour and a half from when I was admitted to when I got my first pain meds…Dilaudid is my new best friend! 5 hours after getting there I left with the diagnosis of a 7mm stone in my left kidney, plus prescriptions for antibiotics, Flomax and Percocet…and a urologist referral. However, because this was a Saturday I had to wait 2 days to make an appointment. As a kidney stone newbie, I was really put off by the urologist office’s lack of a sense of urgency, they couldn’t see me Monday and I practically forced them to fit me in Tuesday (today).
I realize (now) that I’m not going to die from this, but all the meds make me sluggish and its hard to work, so the sooner its over the better. I’m just guessing (and hoping after cb’s tale of passing a 4mm stone) that a 7mm stone will require a little help from the doctor, which will take more time.

i was diagonsed with kidneystones.Doctor used catscan and found one 3 cm stone passing thru the urethra. Two days passed and the pain was experienced. I passed one stone.It was half the size of a pinhead.Since then I have passed 5 smaller ones, the size of a pelet in a shotgun shel. A week has passed and my hip still hurts.My right testicle feels bruised too. I have not been to the urologist yet. I would like to know if all the stones are passed. I dont want to go thru that excruciating pain again.

Any can help one month ago I was diagnosed with a stone in my ureter so doctor give me a medicine for 2 weeks and said it will be removed by medicines now when I first found a blood in my urine I go to HOMEOPATHIC DOCTOR who advised me to have an USG which shows a 7mm stone in my right lower ureter currently I am taking homeopathic medicine for 5 days there is no severe pain except a mild one in my right backbone

I have a 4 mm by 8mm stone stuck in the passage between the kidney and the bladder. They want to perform Ureteroscopy which is 90 to 95 % effective. I’m going to paste in what the Kaiser site says:

About 10 percent of patients with kidney stones cannot pass them without treatment. We will recommend an appropriate procedure based on the size, number, and location of stones, the visibility of stones on X-rays, the presence or absence of infection, your particular anatomy, retreatment rate, and your preferences. Generally speaking, the more invasive the procedure, the higher the stone-free rate and higher the complication rate.
Shock wave lithotripsy is a noninvasive outpatient procedure that uses intravenous sedation for anesthesia. The stone must be detectable by plain X-ray. This procedure uses concentrated sound waves, which are directed through your body at the stone. This will cause the stone to break into small particles, which can then pass from the kidney with the urine. Stone fragments may take a few weeks to pass out of your body, and you might need multiple treatments.
The procedure is 30 to 90 percent effective, depending on the size, location, and type of stone. However, there are some risks involved. If you experience severe bleeding from your kidney during the procedure, you may need a blood transfusion. This happens rarely. You might experience pain from passing stone fragments. If your stones do not break up, we may need to provide an additional procedure to remove fragments. As with any surgical intervention, there is a risk of infection.
Ureteroscopy is used mostly to remove ureteral stones, but it may also be used for kidney stones. This is an outpatient procedure requiring anesthesia. It involves introducing a long thin scope into the bladder and ureter to reach the stone. The stone may then be retrieved with a small basket device passed through the scope or fragmented using a special laser. The procedure is 90 to 95 percent effective. Risks include injury to your urinary tract, infection, and an inability to reach the stone, necessitating additional procedures.
Percutaneous nephrolithotomy involves surgical removal of large kidney stones. This surgery requires general anesthesia and 1 to 3 days in the hospital. Entry into the kidney is made through a small incision in the back or flank to introduce instruments that can fragment and remove the stones. Risks include:
Bleeding, occasionally requiring a blood transfusion
Injury to the kidney
Injury to surrounding organs
Infection
Additional procedures to remove residual stones
Ureteral stent is a tube placed into the ureter that bypasses the obstructing stone. This may be used for emergency treatment of pain, infection, or impacted stones. Sometimes stents are placed as part of the other procedures to help with recovery. They are not permanent. Some can be left in place for up to 12 months, but normally they are removed sooner. Stents often irritate the bladder, causing urgent and frequent urination, urinary burning, and bloody urine. We try to remove them as soon as possible after your surgery in the urology clinic.
Percutaneous nephrostomy involves a tube placed through the skin of the back or flank directly into the kidney. This procedure drains urine from the kidney to prevent pain, infection, or kidney damage.
Why Treatment is Important
Kidney stone passage rarely damages the kidney. However, severe kidney blockage for many months could damage the kidney. In addition, kidney stones may cause chronic kidney infections, which can lead to kidney damage if left untreated.

I went to the ER by myself three weeks ago knowing fully well based on the symptoms that kidney stone is here again.I was diagnosed with a 5mm stone and the Dr.was hopeful that i will pass it.I visited my Urologist a few day after leaving the ER (spent 3hrs),the same Urologist that performed the Shockwave litho surgery about a year ago and he confirmed that the stone had moved but not yet in my bladder ,positive sign. However it’s been 4 weeks,i strongly believe the sotne is still there but i dont feel any pain.My concern is that i hope this will not damage my kidney.I’m still on Flowmax and drinking gallons of water everyday.
Any advise on how to pass this sotne and the implications of it still there.The Urologist did not advise or preventive measures despite the huge cost of last year’s surgery and the various test that had been done.
Please advise, i don’t want any surgery or want to go throug the discomfort of stent insertion again, huh that was painful during the last surgery.

Hey kay — This post is from last year. I assume all turned out OK, but felt to reply all the same, as I’m dealing with a 7mm stone – lodged in my tube between kidney and bladder. Most common “home-remedy” is to take 2 oz of fresh squeezed lemon juice, 2 oz of apple cider vinegar (Bragg’s organic ACV) and 1 oz olive oil (best if organic too). Drink in morning, follow with 1 TB ACV and 1/2 lemon in 8 oz. warm water (best if purified water). every few hours … always take in the space between meals (30 minutes either side of eating food). The malic acid of apples dissolves Kidney Stones – if they’re calcium-based stones … which 80% are. Often comes from too acidic of a diet, and not drinking enough water, — which normally helps dilute toxic build-up and wash out acidic-ness from too much meat, dairy, sugar, etc. … not enough vegetables. If we let ourselves get thirsty we’ve already waited too long to drink.
I have passed six small(under 8 mm) stones and had one 1.2 cm surgically removed. I still have a 2 cm in the right kidney. My advice is to try to get your stone analyzed. A simple change of diet can sometimes prevent more stones from forming. Some medications, called diuretics, can cause stones.

you passed a 14mm stone through your ureter and you are alive to tell us? That is huge. I’ve been told that more than 7mm will not pass….
7mm stone, only 20% change of passing, you can try to do that, but if it fails to move down in ureter, you are in your worst nightmare.

I am told i have a 4mm non-obstructive stone in the inferior lobe. This 4mm was found today. 3 Days back i was rushed to emergency and they found a 3mm stone close to bladder. I passed it (no pain now) and i think it should have passed out. During my consultation with urologist, he said there is another 4mm in the kidney that was not found during my emergency. The urologist says i must take a non-invasive surgery. I am a bit concerned and need more input before i decide. Thanks much.

I just had two episodes this week. I have had a total of 14 now in 11 years. It’s been 3 years since my last major episode and now it’s like they’re coming to make up for it! Been having them since I was 17. Luckily they’ve only hurt when they started traveling and I’ve always been able to get them out. Had first experience with stones passing about 6 weeks ago with 2 stones, one 5 mm, one smaller. Worst pain was 6-7 on 0-10 scale, bad but not pass-out level.
Went to an ER. ER put in an IV to replace liquids and give me a pain med. CT scan identified the stones. 5mm stone passed into bladder that evening in the ER, pain completely disappeared. Never saw or felt anything pass out of the urethra. Got a prescription for 5 tamsulosin (Flomax) capsules and I took one that night. No more symptoms until tonight
Since first event have increased consumption of water using pint/500ml bottles with a squirt of ReaLemon and a little sugar to tone down the sourness. 4-6 bottles per day plus regular liquids, e.g., coffee.

Had discomfort in kidney areas (about a 2 on a 1 to 10 scale) went to er and was told I had tiny kidney stones in both kidneys. Its been 7 Weeks and I still have the discomfort, not to painful just annoying. Been drinking massive amounts of water and cut all other liquids out. No blood or pain when I urinate. Felt a few pass from the kidney to the bladder, but nothing after that. Anyone with similar symptoms. Looking for answers. Thanks.
Pretty similar to what Michael is describing here. I had my first episode of kidney stones about 2 or 3 years ago (I was 29 or 30 at the time). Felt intense pain during the night, but not as absolutely excrutiating as I’ve read other people say. It was a 6 out of 10. Went to the ER, they found a kidney stone. The doctor gave me the option to wait it pass or have a ureteroscopy (which my insurance did cover), I chose to have it out of myself. The doctor said the stone broke off as they were removing it. Went back home that night, feeling better. Had intense pain for 2 more days, until suddenly nothing. I did not see it pass.
About 6 months ago I had a pain episode that lasted about a day, and also stopped out of nowhere.
Now I have been in a mild pain on the kidney and groin areas for the past 5 days or so (pain level about 3 out of 10). Taking a lot of water. A lot. I have seen tiny (less than a mm I suppose) black formations about 1 in each 7 times I pee. Pain has reduced since yesterday, but not too much. It is bearable, just annoying. Ricardo, Your situation sounds a lot like mine. It sounds like little flecks of stones maybe passing soon. At least, that was my experience. Sitting made it so much worse. The discomfort subsided once a couple of stones passed And it happened within 24hours. I stayed a little achey the rest of the day but my nausea and headache and ability to sit improved Almost immediately. Still dealing with this issue on and off for the last 2 weeks.
