I have had kidney stones on and off for 26 years, have had several operations including a Nephrostomy, and Ureteroscopies aswell as Stents fitted, I have just the other day had a Ureteroscopy and had to return by ambulance to hospital where I was admitted, due to either a blocked kidney or ureter, I am now all clear, but still have fragments of stones floating about in the kidney, I asked my Urologist why do I keep getting stones? and will I get damaged kidneys? His answer was that I am a patient who is prone to getting stones and it is more than likely I will have this for the rest of my life unfortunately, they will closely analyse me and keep check on my functionability, but it doesn’t alter the fact that I am now classed in the Renal world as a “Stoner”. Just something I have to live with unfortunately. Great eh?
I’m trying to get all the information I can about stones. I had my first stone when I was 29, 4 years and 11 stones later I just keep getting them. I currently have 5 stones : 4 on the left 15, 11, 7 and 3mm the one on the right is also 7mm. I have never been able to pass a stone this will be my 5th surgery. Any information provided would help so much. And thank you for your stories, they really help.

I have a 5mm stone in the urethra. Hoping not to get surgery I did a bit of research and it was suggested the juice of four lemons with 2oz of olive oil may dissolve the stone. Drank this for 2 days and out popped a chunk of stone. So give it a go.
Carla. You didnt have the same kidney stones I had then. Because i was in so much pain I was crying. I certainly didnt want to be touched by anyone. Xrays show the stones and screw any doctor or physician that ignores that!
uric acid based Kidney stones can not be seen by X-Ray. Only by ultrasound can they be seen. Have passed 10 Uric acid based kidney stones that required me to go to the hospital for pain management and lots of IV fluids to help the stone pass.
I feel for all the folks that have this as a reoccurring problem. I had my 1st confirmed stoned and, at only 2mm, it was the worse pain I have ever felt. Not knowing the problem, had to take an ambulance ride then it took morphine and 2 percocets just to get the pain to go away. I was able to keep the pain at bay with 1 percocet every 4 hours. It’s just really hard to imagine how much pain can be given my such a small thing in the body (can’t imagine the larger ones). I’m hoping mine passed… nothing hurt coming out but something did come out…
I am a 47 year old male,and I have been forming these brutally painful kidney stones in disturbing quantities since high school, of course back in those days one did not have the type of information at their fingertips. I actually was in the emergency room a few hours ago in severe pain,and unfortunately alot of emergency room doctors treat me like a drug seeker,it brings me to tears of angry frustration. Does anyone have any advice regarding this,and what can I do to make doctors take me seriously?
Have someone who loves you rub your back gently. Breathe deeply and slowly. Don’t have to ask for pain medications then. Stay calm.
Hello my. Friend…. had kidneys stone 6 year ago I try alot of. Medications but didn’t get benefit. Oh one thing drinking water and don’t eat tomato milk eggs……and calcium foood…. And pray God should be change life
Went to stay with my mother after heart surgery. She was doing bad and I prayed to take the pain from her, she had for two days. Thirty minutes later, her pain went down. I began to feel a burning sensation that worsened. I began to hurt so bad I vomited in the hallway of the hospital. The staff looked mad. I said I felt like passing out and the charge nurse told me to sit back in a chair so I wouldn’t fall out of it. She went back to pretending she was working. I finally asked an hour later to go to the ER. The man who came told me to get onto the table because he only brought two men and not four, making fun of my weight. They had no room at the ER so I was tended to in the hall. I asked to be sat up because it hurt so bad laying down. A man told me “no” because I wouldn’t keep my feet still and I “would just slide down”. Another hour later and the meds were given and some relief. The doctor, who was nice came to dismiss me and said the scan indicated I likely have cancer. Oh what fun a kidney stone can be. But, I do thank God for the pain…but hope for prayers for the other.
Interesting reading some of these comments. I had my first ksc when I was 16. I have since passed at least 5 and both my kidneys are full of stones. They don’t bother me for a long time and them wham I’m hit with them. I wish I was lucky enough to pass them in days or weeks. It takes YEARS for me to pass a stone. It’s very inconvenient to say the least. I am thankful that for the most part I can tolerate the pain. If I feel pain, I drink a ton more water to dialate the ureter and make things easier for myself. Soon I will be heading to a urologist as now I have some kidney damage, along with 3 stones in my right ureter and 1 in my left. I’m 47 and I’m really just sick and tired of being a stoner.
I sooooo feel for all of you. I had my 1st stone at 19 another at 22 and n-othing again til I was pregnant with my 2nd (and last ) child at 30. Since then my stones have gotten soooo bad, that I pass on average 5- 6 stones per day. I have had over 100 surgeries, and several near death experiences. All my mineral levels are bang on normal, and they have no idea, why I produce them at this alarming rate
I have asked my Dr, if they could remove both kidneys and I would go on dialysis. Has anybody done this? Or has anybody had a transplant due to stones, and what were the results.
I am currently awaiting surgery to remove another bunch of stones, and I’m currently double stented as a result of having both urether’s blocked by stones, about 2 weeks ago. I had a fall a few days ago, and my kidney pain has skyrocketed.
I did try a concoction one night about a month ago. It was a mixture of applecider vinegar, lemon juice and olive oil. The taste is vile, but 4hours later I passed the stone. I’ll have to try it again to see if it really works. Really hard to drink something so vile when you’re feeling so nauseated. Has anyone else tried this recipe?
Yes, the apple juice/cider and olive oil/grapefruit cleanse also helps relieve you of hundreds if not thousands of gallbladder/liver stones. Google the book,”THE LIVER AND GALLBLADDER MIRACLE CLEANSE” by Andreas Moritz.
beet juice!!!! cut about 2beets in half an boil in a little bit of water. Boil till water is dark then remove the beets and drink the juice. Its nasty an you may feel nauseous the next day but it literally dissolves the stones. my cousin had problems with kidney stones and that was the only thing that worked. But I wouldn’t recommend drinking it All the time.
ihave 2 calcuim stones in my left kidney biggest is 1.60cm after having a shockwave (non invasive) surgery it went down to 1.30cm i was expecting that it will go all the way… but it didnt …. worse, the stent is very discomforting that i would have to carry this for 3 – 6 months … now i will have to go through the same procedure and is scheduled in 3 weeks time… im sick and tired drinking meds for nephrolithiasis (real leaf capsul and alcalka)… just today i pass 1 stone … it is really painful… but as advs by my urologist and nephrologist… avoid strawberries.. meat…cheese …. avoid salt … legumes and practise the rabbit style of eating….
This is important for anyone with ongoing multiple stones as I have suffered for 10 years from hundreds of stones, at least 40 trips to the hospital and at least 20 hospital admissions. My stones have ranged from tiny to 1.5 cm and have had every kind of treatment for them. I have ended up in ICU three times from obstructing stones and have had septic infections because of the obstructions countless times (hence the hospital admissions).
I’ve asked Why so very many times without answers.
This year, in the hospital, my calcium level (blood) was tested and it was “through the roof”, which made sense for the stones, but still didn’t know why. Because of the high calcium level, they then checked my parathyroid level and discovered that it, too was high. Parathyroid is a small gland that produces hormones in your system. When it is overproductive, it secrets too much of the hormone, causing your bones to be “chipped away”, ending up in the blood stream with a final resting place in your kidney. Over time, they grow or bunch together in clusters and can cause what is a baffling number of kidney stones, joint and bone aches as well as sore stomach.
When they looked at my parathyroid on ultrasound, they discovered that it was surrounded by tumours and thus understanding why it was overproducing the hormone.
This IS the CAUSE OF ALL OF THE HUNDREDS OF STONES that I have passed and had someone checked my calcium and / or parathyroid levels earlier, I would have been saved many hospital visits, unending pain and times where my fever has gone so high that I thought I was dying. Sick is an understatement for how ill the stones have made me.
If you suffer from multiple stones, I urge you to have your blood tested for calcium levels and if that is high, have your doctor check your parathyroid levels. It may be the answer that you have been praying for.
Although I still have hundreds of tiny stones to pass, I am no longer producing stones and am thrilled to know that eventually I may not have a kidney that looks like a “starry night” on ultrasound!

I have clusters of stones that I have had since birth and I continue to create more. Recently they did lithotripsty to blast them. all it did was scatter them all over my kidney and now they are growing. I am suppose to have surgery again to try and remove them. So since they did calcium blood test and parathyroid levels on you, how did it stop you from making stones? I have over 200 stones and I am so tired of this. I have calcium and acidic. I am confused can I have calcium or not?? I am glad you are doing better.

I had my first stones during my second pregnancy. I passed one at home at 6 months, and another at 8 months. Of course I didn’t realize what happened until the second time when I told my dr about it.
I just had another episode last night. I actually went to the er this time. I haven’t passed them yet (although I’ve passed quite a few horrifically large blot clots!) They’re 5 and 6mm, so I’m hopeful I can pass them on my own. Still, it’s a terribly painful experience to go through!
Know that a stone that is 4mm has an 80% chance of passing on it’s own and a 5mm stone only has a 20% chance of passing. If your stone is small enough to pass, I believe what you’re looking for is an herb called chanca piedra (stone breaker). You can buy it online in liquid form. I add it to 8oz of lemonade with 2tbs of organic apple cider vinegar. lemonade is supposed to help break down the stone and some doctors are even recommending drinking lemonade daily to avoid future stones. Another natural product is called CalMag. It is supposed to help break down a stone also. I know it also works for the pain. You can buy it at a GNC. Or order it online. It should cost around $20. Health food stores that carry it charge much more than that.I recommend the raspberry flavor. Just follow the directions on the bottle. Good luck to you, I hope this helps.

I have never had a KS in my life until I became pregnant 3 months ago. In the passed 2 weeks I know for sure I passed 1. The first episode I had I was vomiting and was in debilitating pain. My dr is currently having the stone I passed analyzed but I was wondering if any other female has experienced this only while pregnant and if there is anything to prevent it?
I’m a little over 20 weeks pregnate and just successfully passed two stones over the weekend. I was drinking and eating fresh lemons like crazy and I think that helped to break it down – the stone they origionally saw on the ultrasound was 1.2cm and I think from what I passed it broke in half about 7 mm and 5 mm stone is what I ended up passing. I was pretty lucky and had smooth stones that I was able to pass from home. No vomiting but then I never vomit. I feel completly back to normal now. I am also waiting for the tests to come back to tell me what kind of stones I had.
From what I have read – limit salts, drink a ton of water and have at least one lemon water a day, limit proteins should all help prevent future stones. I also cut out all sodas and am limiting sugars. Basically I’m sticking to chicken, pasta, fruit and veggies and just drinking water with fresh squeezed lemons. This was my first time dealing with stones and my 3rd pregnancy.
Yes I am 6 months pregnant and just passed a kidney stone. Best way to avoid pain and help it dislodge is to firing at least 700 ml of water throughout the night. Half a glass of water before and after urination will help take off the pain and dislodge the stone faster.

Wow, same thing with me only I was never able to pass the damn thing on my own and had a stent put in at 7mos and ended up on percocet for pain for yhe rest of it. I am 9 weeks pp and finally had to have surgery to remove a spikey 4mm stone that lodged itself I n my uterer. HORRIBLE!!#
Cranberry juice. I buy 100% juice with cranberry and other fruits included. My favorite is Cranberry and Grape at Wal-Mart. I will pour a glass full of water and add Cranberry juice to the other half and drink it. Seems to help break down my kidney stones.
Cranberry juice is only good for kidney infections and actually is not good for people who have a history of stones. I have had many operations from lytho to perc. One perc took 4 separate operations one week apart. I have been on potassium citrate and allopurinol for years and it is working. The growth of stones has decreased a lot. You cannot skip the meds and must drink plenty of water. Like my doc says, your pee is must be clear and if you are thirsty, it’s already too late!

I have had the operation done well where they laser it while you are sleeping and it is completely painless and as if it never happened and really worth it trust me. I hate surgery and have had to go through painful ones and this is not one of them. It’s called a LITHOTRIPSY.
But if you are really trying to dissolve it drink as much lemon juice as you possibly can.
This may be too late… But usually that site won’t pass on its own. I’m a 26-yr old female who never had surgery before and all of a sudden they hit me with two in a row to remove 4 stones, one of which is blocking the tube btwn kidney and bladder. The surgery was a piece of cake!! No pain afterwards. Just light discomfort which went away after just a day. Get it over with & don’t be afraid.
Hey Ramo, the biggest thing I found is DO NOT WAIT. There are many procedures and the longer you wait the better the chance of kidney failure and options go down. The minute you know of a stone, wait a few days to pass and if that does not happen go to the Emergency Room or your Physician and have another x-ray and make an appointment with a Urologist to get professionally removed. I waited over a month and it nearly cost me my life.
…and by the way, that is the million dollar question isn’t it: “What do we take to dissolve kidney stones”? Whoever invents the “dissolve formula” will certainly be a millionaire real quick! lol

I just came from my nephrologist office today where the night before I was in the bathtub and pass out in pain. I passed two 20mm kidney stones and the 3rd one was 15mm.

I love to hear your story. I had the worst pain ever last Friday thinking I had food poisoning on Christmas day. Went to ER did ct scan and found 1.4 cm stone in my left kidney. Had a surgery at midnight that night they placed a stent and couldn’t laser the stone since I have an infection. I am scheduled to have two surgeries since the doctor said they cannot keep me under anesthesia for long hours. The stent is making my life miserable.
Please tell me how your stone came out I am very curious to know.

I too would love to know how you did that because a ureter is only 3 millimeters in diameter, and while it may dialate some with the help of medications, I don’t believe it’s possible to dialate almost 7 times it’s normal size.
Ok so, here is the freak of nature. I have 3 kidneys. Two on the left side, one on the right. They all function, and in fact the two on the left side each have their own ureter as well. For 15 years it’s always been the lower left kidney producing the stones. Well, not stones, I produce boulders!! My largest one was 23mm in size. The other 13 that I had at the same time, were 12 and 13mm in size. I’m amazed I didn’t rattle when I walked. I was in the hospital every 6 to 8 weeks for about 3 years dealing with this. I was about ready to demand my own personalized parking place at the hospital, I was there so often. I’ve passed 9mm sized stones before, (I have them in alcohol. I teased my husband that I was going to make nipple rings out of them). Finally, over time, it wasn’t quite as often.
I managed to keep them small and could pass them on my own. Well, now it seems that the “good” upper left kidney has gone over to the dark side, because the dark side has cookies!!! It’s now producing stones. Oh joy!! I was in the hospital on Friday, attempting to have both kidneys cleaned out. However, the implements aren’t designed for people built like me, my urologist just does the best he can. There are still some small stones in a pocket he can’t get to. I’m also sporting, not one, but two stints for both of the left side ureters! I think I hate the stints more than dealing with the stones themselves!
I will always produce stones, it’s something my system does. Medication isn’t as effective as I was hoping it would be.

They had first tried the lithotripsy but still had a big part of stone left which he said even grew within a month of the lithotripsy. After taking these two products for 2 weeks AND praying dr cancelled the procedure and told me it had shrank. And that the stone was to small to do the procedure now And what was left will pass. I honestly am amazed and thankful. So had to share. Give it a try. It may or may not work for you. I have nothing to gain except that I understand how you feel. I have had kidney stones for years. I’m Stone free. Also I drank a ton of water with lemon.

I’ve actually had TWO kidney stones in my lifetime. The first one I had was on the morning of September 5th, 2011 (Labor Day). After I ate breakfast I tried to vomit but I couldn’t. But as I made my way to the bathroom I felt as if I was on the verge of vomiting. My mom (who is dead now) originally thought I had an intestinal cramp (or so that’s what she told my ex-boss over the phone). But the pain moved to my pelvis, and we thought I had appendicitis. So my mom took me to the hospital, and they x rayed me. Turns out it was none of the above. I had a kidney stone. Four days later I passed the stone. But I still felt a little sick even though the stone had passed.
I got another kidney stone on the morning of August 5th, 2012. Fortunately, my second kidney stone wasn’t as big as and didn’t last as long as my first. Two days after I got the second stone I passed it, and I was pleasantly surprised. But even though I passed my kidney stone I still felt a little sick. But I went to work anyway. Weirdly enough, when my mom phoned my ex-boss the dial tone and the ringback tone sounded lower in pitch, as did all the songs on her car stereo. But I gradually got better each day, and the sounds returned to normal.
I have been plagued by ks for 10 yrs now.the largest passed to date, 8mm. I would average 2-3 per yr especially in the summer while working in a hot factory as well as farming and working in the heat.I also have arthritis and back problems.what has helped me is taking apple cider vinegar daily.(1 oz) or a shot glass full. and a dose of baking soda once a week. 1 tsp in water. Hope this helps someone else.I havent had any this yr knock on wood!

I was 18 when I passed my 1st,then again at 30.AFter that the stones would come like 2to 3 a month,I am now 51 and still continue to pass at least 2 every month sometimes more.STones run in my family.My stones are calcium oxilate and phosphate.
They said that people that have stones should take Magnesium tablets to prevent and remove stones but magnesium also depletes Zinc in the process so take magnesium and zinc together. I have had pain since march 2014 and it is now Sept 2014 its taken this long just to get an ultrasound. It all started when i got back pain and shortly after that i had a really bad fever, feeling achy and on the way home from work I felt like I was having an outer body experience, like I was there but all i could hear was myself thinking I needed to get of the bus. As soon as i got off the bus I threw up and felt somewhat better but still dizzy and out of it. As soon as I got home I jumped into a very hot bath (no cold water) and stayed there for about 20 mins. I got out and stumbled to the bedroom trying not to be sick and laid on the bed, didn’t even try to dry myself off. For 3 days I was bed ridden and didn’t eat
All the time my genital area was red and sore and swollen, I was peeing every 5 mins which hurt, my Prostate blew up so i couldn’t pee and i also found that i couldn’t pass stools. My urine was also cloudy and smelt like the male urinals in a nightclub. now all of a sudden the pain has moved from my prostate area and is now effecting my vas deferens and it also starting to affect the dimples of my lower back like i have been bent over for a while and then got back up and it hurts (you know what i mean) hoping this is a sign that its coming out. I have spent the last 3 weeks thinking that it got stuck in the bladder. I have been taking a mixture of Ibuprofen, Paracetamol, magnesium and zinc tablets all at once. lets hope it is a stone that’s passing.
I wish no body to feel a kidney pain due to that I live it every day and I know how painful

For those of you that think you are too young, I am female, Caucasian and had my first at 17! Thought I was dying! I do have a family history and have had my stones tested and produce two different kinds. Unbelievably, I had a bad one and had to go to the er 3 weeks ago, took the pain mess and back in the er 4 days later. They did a CT scan and I had 6 stones they thought! Turns out I passed 4, two quite large, all on my right side. Passed at home just staying on the pain meds. Now this past week, I had one on my left! Ugh! Had 30 while pregnant with my son, the nurses wanted me to name home Stone!

My story goes like this. About two weeks ago I started getting a dull ache in my lower left flank. I went to urgent care where they took a urine sample and put me on Bactrim because of blood in my urine. Saw my GP a the following Monday who had me take an Xray. Next day they called and sent me for an ultrasound, still don’t know cause of pain. During ultrasound the technician spent allot of time inserting arrows on image but would not offer me ANY info on what she had seen (said only a Dr. can tell me)….. ugggg.
Waited 4 DAYS to hear about results from the Ultrasound and that was from my Dr’s nurse telling me I’d been referred to a Urologist for possible kidney stones….. I haven’t been given a date yet to see the Urologist yet but nurse also gave me a perscrip for Flowmax and Norco pain killers. I started the Flowmax 2 days ago and really havent noticed anything different. I don’t take the Norcos because I don’t have serious pain, just an ache in my left flank. I’m also a little swollen on the left side too. The only other problem I have is not being able to comfortably sleep at night.
I work outside in the sun and I know probably don’t drink enough water all the time. But sometimes when It’s really hot I’ll drink 2 gallons of water and not pee one time, I just sweat like crazy… Any one else have similar situation? I’m almost hoping this is a stone and not something worse…

I’m in similar situation. Same symptoms. Have had ongoing uti infection for one month due to stone. Starting my second antibiotic. Not a lot of pain, but blood in my urine (sometimes I can’t see it, the docs just tell me after the urine test). Waiting to see urologist. Had CT scan. Am wondering why you didn’t get a CT scan. Everything I have read says this is the definitive test for stones. I have two large ones which will probably need removal as well as a few small ones. Also have Rx for pain, but don’t need it…yet. So, they didn’t TELL you that you had stones? If you do pass your stone make sure you keep it. That way they can analyze what it is composed of. It will help you to know so that you can alter your diet and they will be able to adjust your treatment accordingly. Good Luck! I’d be pushing for an appointment with that urologist. Seems to take forever! As far as drinking enough water, oh BS. I get most of my calories through liquids and look where I am! Think some people are just predisposed to these things.
I have passed 21 stones since I passed my very first stone in March of 2013. The doctors have no clue why I am getting them and have no clue what I should do to prevent them. Does anyone else have multiple stones with no answers? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I have no idea if this will help you. But, in 2007 my uncle had severe back problems, he finally decided he couldn’t live with the pain & agreed to surgery. In the several months leading up to his surgery, he had 14 kidney stones. His neurologist attributed the KS’s he was having to his back problems, he explained that his body was attempting to fuse his back on its own, by creating excess calcium. However, that didn’t work, so all the excess calcium his body was creating would be sent to his kidneys, thus causing all of his KS’s. The neurologist who did my uncles surgery is one of the best neurosurgeons in the country. So my uncle believed that very well might have been what was causing his stones. Since he is the best, he should certainly know what he’s talking about, lol! The neurosurgeons claims were confirmed, since his surgery, ha has had no kidney stones! Like I said, I have no idea if this could be a possibility in your situation. But I thought I’d tell you about my uncles experience, on the off chance it may help! š
